Democracy in Crisis

Session Overview

Analyst, facilitator, and researcher Luis Arellano joins us from Pangaea Wire Group in Mexico to discuss how open communications can improve citizens’ perception of democracy.

With populism on the rise, authoritarian regimes and a worldwide economic crisis, it’s becoming clear that more and more people are not feeling represented by their government. In a study completed by the Pew Research Center, it was found that 51% of respondents were unhappy with the state of their democracy.

However, as Luis explains, this can change. Government communicators play a pivotal role in monitoring and responding to public opinion through social media and citizen participation mechanisms.

Listen to learn how you as a government communicator can use these tools within your own nation’s democracy.

After watching this video, you will:

  • Understand how citizens’ perception of democracy is changing.
  • Learn what can be done to improve citizens’ perception of democracy.
  • Know the opportunities governments can take when they open themselves up to new technologies.
