Communication at Every Level: Building Local Partnerships

Session Overview:

In this session from the 2020 GovComms Festival, we hear from the President of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), Mandy Pearse.

Mandy discusses the level of trust in government organisations. She explains why the supposed declining level of trust in government is a media myth. She points to evidence suggesting that trust in government has not changed significantly over the past half-century.

She shows that local government officials have a higher trust level than their counterparts in national governments. She explains how and why national government can form partnerships with local governments, and how such partnerships can be to the benefit of communication.

Mandy argues why the relationship between central and local governments are “equal relationships” as opposed to “parent and child relationships”.

Mandy explores the roles of central and local governments. Central governments can set policies, and local governments can tailor those policies to their communities to ensure impact.

After watching this video, you will be able to:

  • Understand that the level of trust in local government differs to that of central governments.
  • Recognise the value in local and central government partnerships.
  • Understand why central governments must work with local governments to deliver communications campaigns that make a difference. What can local governments offer?

Please note that this is a recording of a live presentation.
