Online Engagement During Uncertain Times

Session Overview:

In this session from the 2020 GovComms Festival, we hear from Amanda Nagl and Kent Wyatt about the topic of online engagement.

Amanda Nagl is the Co-Founder of Unlocking Government and Kent Wyatt is the Communications Manager at the City of Tigard, Oregon.

Amanda and Kent talk about the golden circle of community engagement, and why it is important to talk about ‘why’ we do things, as opposed to just ‘what’ we’re doing or ‘how’ we’re doing it.

They discuss the lessons learnt about communication and online engagement in 2020, the year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kent explains how the City of Tigard was able to use online engagement to interact with their citizens during the pandemic. This included online platforms, podcasts and virtual and interactive council updates.

Amanda and Kent also give their predictions for how the communications profession will respond to the COVID-19 pandemic with respect to online engagement. Amanda explains why she is optimistic about how local governments will embrace the new tools available to them.
