Systems-Thinking to Reduce Single-use Plastics and Household Organic Waste: Academic and Practitioner Insights

Session Overview

In this session from the 2020 GovComms Festival, Vanessa Salamone and Aarti Sewak explore stakeholder initiatives that can be used to reduce the prevalence of single-use plastics and promote effective waste management.

Vanessa is the Social Media Manager at Social Marketing @ Griffith. Aarti is a Research Assistant and PhD Candidate at Social Marketing @ Griffith.

Vanessa discusses the context of single-use plastic usage in Australia. She claims that in order to reduce single-use plastics, we must visualize the packaging value chain to ensure packaging can be valuably re-used. Vanessa examines the key stakeholders involved in the issue.

Aarti discusses the socio-ecological model and how it relates to solid waste management. She uses the model to discuss the areas of responsibility of different stakeholders.
