Building a Bridge Across the Traditional and Progressive Divide

Session Overview

Research Director of Pollinate, Andrew Knox, explores how government should engage with ‘progressives’ – a demographic of people who are typically younger, more likely to live in metropolitan areas and more likely to have a university education.

According to Andrew, progressives value universalism and are more open to change than their counterparts. They are more likely to promote the interests of the group over their individual needs.

They are more likely to be active on social media and have extensive social group connections.

Andrew will explore why progressives could be the antidote to polarisation and why government communication should engage them as vehicles for change.

After watching this video, you will be able to:

  • Understand the characteristics of progressives – a new demographic of people who value change, new ideas and social connection.
  • Recognise the role that progressives can play in framing government communication to reduce polarisation and increase social harmony.
