What does a Modern Government Communications Function and Skill-Set look like?

Session Overview

In this presentation from the 2020 GovComms Festival, Donna van Bueren from the Behaviour Change Collaborative and Sean Larkins from the UK WPP Government and Public Sector Practice discuss their 2017 paper that looks into government communications, and how the papers findings can be utilised today.

The 2017 study found that communicators felt that the citizens were not being taken into account when it came to decision making and that communicators are not regularly involved in policy development. To combat these issues, Donna and Sean discuss many strategies which they have created to assist in making a more blended skill set of government communicators.

The main goals of government communicators should be to build trust, understand audiences, think long-term and integrate policy. After watching this presentation, you will understand how to achieve these goals in the most effective and efficient way possible.

After watching this video, you will

  • Learn about the 2017 Leaders’ Report, one of the first case studies into government communications.
