Department of Education, Skills and Employment

Skills Organisation – Full Suite of Services

The Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) is overseeing the Skills Organisations initiative which is part of the Australian Government’s $585 million Skills Package.  It is a unique national effort and an opportunity to allow “industry to shape the national training system so that it is more responsive to their skills needs and to enhance the learner experience”.

Our initial engagement came about when DESE wanted to communicate the overarching message and benefits of the Skills Organisations to raise awareness and build positive support amongst its key stakeholders in the industry, peak organisations and the general public. The story that needed to be conveyed was that “The Skills Organisations initiative is a good change”.

Services

Personnel

As we worked together to complete this task, the Department also required support with the establishment of two of the Skills Organisations, namely Digital and Human Services. These new organisations required communication foundations: a vision, mission, strategy and tone of voice.

Problem

The benefits of the Skills Organisations were not translating to the relevant industry stakeholders due to the complexity of the program and the language used to explain it. Our aim was to interpret and translate complex information about ‘Skills Organisations’ into easy to understand, plain English content – for distribution at key stakeholder meetings to improve buy-in.

The Skills Organisations themselves were starting from scratch and with a brand-new proposition. The communication strategy needed to cover important foundational pieces like mission, vision and objectives starting from first principles.

Solution

We started with a kick-off meeting to discuss the project and the problem they were facing. Once we received the information from the DESE, our senior editor translated it into plain English. We then proceeded to design the factsheets according to the DESE style guide with accessibility in mind.

Deliverables

6 x InDesign factsheets, exported in print and accessible PDFs.
4 x Word accessible Word versions

Outcome

We provided accessible, comprehensive information on the Skills Organisations and what they are trying to achieve. Our team delivered high-quality factsheets on time and within budget and were very flexible and accommodating. The DESE was very pleased with the outcome of the project.

The Honourable Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, discussed the importance of the Skills Organisations in providing the industry with the opportunity to shape the training system to be more aligned to the needs of business and industry.
