The thing I miss the most from my career in radio is talking to people.
During the ten years I spent working for ABC radio current affairs and sport in Australia, this was the gift: asking interesting people simple questions about topics that mattered every day.
We had been kicking around the idea of a contentgroup podcast for a few years and it was surprisingly difficult to land on a weekly topic to generate useful content.
But earlier this year we had the breakthrough. contentgroup decided to serve the public sector. It was a decision we should have made sooner. We clarified our mission: ‘to assist public sector organisations strengthen communities and improve the well-being of citizens through effective content marketing’ and imagined our vision: ‘to be the world’s leading content marketing agency for the public sector by 2020’.
These two simple steps help to clarify our purpose and now guide us in everything we do, every day.
Once this focus was sorted, so was the podcast.
We had our audience to serve and the mission was to create value and benefit by finding interesting people to talk about content marketing in the public sector. We did start out by talking about content marketing in government but found our audience responded more favourably to the “public sector” categorisation. It also more accurately reflects who we are as a company and what we are trying to achieve.
Happily, the podcast has taken off proving out the theory that if you create useful, relevant and consistent content for a niche audience over time, you will meet with success.
In the first month we had 136 downloads. By month 6, we were closing in on 4000. Our audience stretches from Virginia to Moscow and many parts in between.
Our mission is to educate people about the practice of content marketing in the public sector.
Thank you to all our loyal listeners for their support, thanks for your encouragement and thanks so much for tuning in.
I really enjoy serving this audience and I look forward to speaking on the topic for many years to come.
If you have any ideas for future topics or future guests, please send them through.
Stay tuned and have a Merry Xmas.
